About

Hiya! My name is Wild Honey. Well, my derby name is Wild Honey and most people call me Honey.
I'm currently training with the Norfolk Brawds Roller Derby team and have been since June 2013.
I also NSO at bouts all over the country as often as I can.
I'm currently skating on Reidell R3's with yellow Suregrip cushions and Rollerbones Day of The Dead 92a wheels. (I seem to get asked that alot, so I thought I'd just post it here!)

"That's all good and well, Honey. But what the heck is Roller Derby?!"

I'm glad you asked! It's easier to watch than to explain, so here's a good video:

Here's it in writing (copied from Wikipedia):

Roller derby is a contact sport played by two teams of five members roller skating in the same direction around a track. Game play consists of a series of short matchups ("jams") in which both teams designate a scoring player (the "jammer") who scores points by lapping members of the opposing team. The teams attempt to assist their own jammer whilst hindering the opposing jammer—in effect, playing both offense and defense simultaneously.Roller derby is played by approximately 1,250 amateur leagues worldwide, nearly half of them outside the U.S

In my experience, Roller Derby is a love affair that will start at the first bout you ever see. Mine started from watching the film Whip It! This then led to me discovering the Norfolk Brawds, which then led on to me seeing their first ever public bout, which led me to see 2 more and then I decided that I was going to try it for myself!

You don't just get to strap on a pair of skates and get to play the game! Oh no! (especially not in my case as I couldn't even skate!) It takes a lot of dedication and a lot of training to get to where our ladies are in the team. So that is why this blog is here. After spending hours scrawling the internet, there wasn't much advice or support for new derby players or "fresh meat". Sure, there were people who had just started derby but they were mainly from skating backgrounds so it wasn't as hard. I had absolutely no skating experience whatsoever! You will see from my first post that I had to be pulled up and down the skating rink by other skaters. So I decided that I would start a blog and that if it gave at least one person the confidence to take up Roller Derby than I had achieved what I set out to.

I do hope you enjoy following me in my derby journey!
